It might be against your state or federal law to access a network which you are not explicitly authorized access. If there is a password for the network, it is against the law to evade the authentication mechanism or to break the password. Surprisingly though, xfinitiwifi does not use encryption and does not ask for a password at all. There are no terms of service you need to read or approve. Using, you are simply granted access as soon as you turn on your computer.

Comcast explicitly broadcasts its SSID with no encryption. It even goes further to offer you complimentary access to the network twice a month. And there is no stated limit on how many devices you can connect to the network at one time. You could simple buy 50 network cards and connect to the network using one of them at a time and get 100 hours of access. Method number 2 described is essentially the same idea, except network card change is “virtual”. Both federal and local laws about accessing wifi networks in situations like this are vague and till courts make up their mind, we will never know for sure if anyone is allowed to use open, free wifi access points. It is just worth mentioning here that these access points are broadcasting openly, in public airspace, in a band that is not regulated by FCC or by ITU and they do not encryption.

I am sure if Comcast did not want us to use this service, they would encrypt their network. Still, I assume no liability for anyone “accessing computer networks which they re not authorized”, whatever that might mean for your local jurisdiction.

All the information here is purely for educational and technical purposes and I am not advocating piggybacking onto Comcast’s wireless network. If you have read my previous posts ( and ), you should have an idea of what xfinitywifi is and how it works. As I promised, I will detail how to connect to this network for free, without registration. I will list the necessary steps required first and then explain how/why they work. If all you want is free wifi, you do not need to read the second part.

There are two ways you can connect to xfinitywifi, both of which rely on: Method 1 (easier, much preferred to the second one for as long as it works). First you need to change the MAC address of your network card. open up a terminal and type the following command: (Note that, the last character of “en0” and “wlan0” is a zero, and not an O). turn off the network interface. sudo ifconfig en0 down (Mac). sudo ifconfig wlan0 down (Ubuntu).

sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:00:00:00:00:0A (if using a Mac). sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:0A (if using Ubuntu). turn the interface back on:.

sudo ifconfig en0 up (Mac). sudo ifconfig wlan0 up (Ubuntu).

Enter the admin password for your computer. Open up the list of available wifi networks and connect to xfinitywifi. Voila You are now connected to xfinitywifi.

No authorization, no registration. NOTE: the “en0” above is the name of your network card on your operating system. If you are using a version of Linux (like Ubuntu, etc. Your network interface name will probably be something like wlan0, wlan1, etc.

To find out your interface name, issue the following command in the terminal and it should list all your interfaces. ifconfig -a. Note 2: You need to repeat this process every time you restart your machine. If you want to make the change permanent, you can add this command to your.bashrc file. And once you use your first session, you have to wait at least 24 hours before you can use your second complimentary pass. Guess how the access point keeps track of your complimentary passes? Your If you have taken any computer networking class, you might have heard of what a MAC address is. So, if you had 2 computers, you could use 4 complimentary passes per month. If you had 10 computers, you could use 20 hours of complimentary access.

What if you had 1 million computers? Of course, there are not many people out there with 1 million computers, but we can pretend to have so. What we are going to do is, every time we use up one of our complimentary passes, we will change our MAC address and pretend to be some other computer.

OK, here are the necessary steps:. Go to the command line and change your MAC address to any arbitrary address using the ifconfig command as before:. sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:00:00:00:00:01 (is using a Mac). sudo ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:01 (for Ubuntu).

Connect to xfinitywifi using the list of available networks. When prompted, signup for a complimentary trialEnter a random zip code and a random email address and agree to the terms of service. voila again you are connected. As mentioned in the previous post, Comcast installed more than 500.000 access points across the nation to provide this xfinitywifi service. Normally, installing this many hotspots would cost Comcast more than $50 million (assuming $100 per device).

However, they managed to pull this off almost for “almost” free. When you get your Internet service through Comcast and subscribe to their internet service, you get a modem installed at your home. Comcast likes to call this device “wireless gateway”. This modem combines several devices in one box, namely a modem, access point, router and firewall. Luckily you do not need to know the functions of these devices, nor how they work. What happens is, the modem (or whatever you might want to call it) broadcasts two separate SSIDs.

The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the Network name and is printed on a label at the bottom of your modem. One of these is the network that you connect to. It might be of the form HOME-XXXX, or something else. Normally you connect to this network to connect to the Internet.

Another network that your modem broadcasts (that most users are not aware of) is xfinitywifi. And all the previously mentioned 500.000 hotspots broadcast this SSID.

This network is completely separate from your own network and its usage does not affect your own network (or so Comcast incorrectly claims). When you are away from your home and want to connect to the Internet, you can connect to the internet using the xfinitywifi network if you are in one of the covered areas. This is how Comcast was able to build the nation’s widest wifi network without a dime out of its pocket. If you are a Comcast XFINITY customer and are away from your home router, there are thousands of hotspots across the nation that broadcast the xfinitywifi SSID. And the great thing is you can connect to these wireless access points, at no additional charge. It is very convenient when you are away from home and do not want to pay your hotel $20 a day for wireless access.

It has over 500,000 hotspots across the nation and the widest coverage of any major wifi network. It also allows you to conserve the data plan of your cell phone. Now, you do not need to tether and use of all your data quota on your wireless plan. Here is a map that shows its coverage. Especially around the big cities, the coverage is OK. In the next post (part 2), I will explain how the infrastructure works in layman’s terms so anyone can have some idea how Comcast was able to install over 500,000 hotspots without a big out-of-pocket expense.

And in the third post (part 3), I will explain how anybody can access the nations largest wifi network for free, even if they do not have a Comcast account. The trick works easily with any MacOS or Linux, UNIX distribution and takes a little work with Windows machines.
